چکیده

I1T HAS BEEN suggested that polyunsaturated fatty acids control, by some mechanism, the levels of blood cholesterol and other blood lipids.1 S Sinclair suggested4 that dietary deficiency of essential fatty acids is responsible for human atherosclerosis. He proposed t-hat the mechanism of atherogenesis involves a replacement of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in serum cholesterol esters by saturated and nonessential unsaturated fatty acids, followed by a deposition of the less soluble saturated esters in the arterial wall resulting in atheromatous lesions. It is not clear from the literature whether data on the composition of human serum lipids support or refute the hypothesis of Sinclair. Subjects with clinical disease due to atherosclerosis, in some studies, have a smaller proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, principally linoleic and arachidonic acids, in their serum lipids than "healthy" subjects from the same population.5-9 The triene/tetraene fatty acid ratio has also been found to be elevated in subjects with clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis,6 which suggests a relative deficiency of essential fatty acids.'0 Herdenstam"l and James et al.,'2 found, to the contrary, the same proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in serum lipids of "healthy" and "atherosclerotic" subjects. Hammond and Lundberg5 reported serum concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy Guatemalans equal to or exceeding

Review: Use of Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) in Ornamental Fish Feeds

Ornamental fish production, like all other segments of aquaculture, relies heavily on the successful spawning, hatching, and survival of larvae. Little is known about the nutrient requirements of most ornamental fish species. In many cultivars of fishes, such as Ornamental fish, especially in those new Ornamental fish species introduced to the aquaculture industry, the rate of fecundity is an i...

Hepatic triacylglycerols and serum non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) variations in indigenous water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in the province of Khuzestan, Iran

Fatty liver is a metabolic disorder of dairy cows in early lactation, and approximately half of multi-parous dairy cows experience a moderate to severe fatty liver at calving. Since the occurrence of fatty liver in buffalo is not known, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hepatic content of triacylglycerols (TAG) and total lipids (TL), and the serum content of non-esterified fatty acids (...

Serum fatty acids, lipoprotein(a) and apolipoprotein composition of rural, suburban and urban populations in North Vietnam.

This study was conducted to investigate the concentrations of serum fatty acids, lipoprotein(a) and apolipoprotein of three populations in North Vietnam: rural area with low income (n = 101), suburban with average income (n = 97), and urban with high income (n = 95). The results showed the suburban and urban populations had higher fat intake than the rural. The fat intake in quality was differe...
